Unfortunately, a major misconception regarding the sustainability of PET bottles (polyethylene terephthalate) compared to glass bottles is very common.
Glass bottles are many times more energy-intensive in production and recycling than the production or recycling of PET bottles. The reason for this is the melting temperature of glass, which is about 1,650 degrees, but only about 260 degrees for PET. Thus, PET bottles are more climate-friendly to produce and recycle.
Even during transport, the CO2 balance of the glass packaging is considerably worse than that of light PET packaging due to the much higher weight and the thus higher consumption of fuel.
