Auslöser sind häufig Harnsteine, vor allem Struvit- und Calciumoxalatsteine. Sie entstehen, wenn sich normalerweise gelöste Mineralstoffe zusammenballen. Die Größe kann von sehr klein (Harngrieß) bis hin zu mehreren Zentimetern (Harnsteine) reichen.
